The Problem
1. Africa and more specifically South Africa has some of the highest rates of youth unemployment globally.
South Africa’s unemployment rate in 2021 was 33.56%, a 4.34% increase from 2020. Sub-Saharan Africa’s unemployment rate for 2021 was 7.62%, a 0.37% increase from 2020.
2. Technology companies face a high turnover of developers.
According to Devskill, tech’s high turnover rate (13.2%) exceeds that of any other industry (10.5% average).
3. Programmers and software engineers are in great demand globally.
The US Bureau of Labour Statistics shows that jobs in software development are expected to increase by 25% between 2021 and 2031.
The 2022 JCSE-IITPSAICT Skills Survey Twelfth Edition lists the following top occupations with hard-to-fill vacancies in the MICT sector:
